Description:

Physical Agent Modalities for the Upper Extremity

Course Description:

Incorporating thermal and electrical modalities as an adjunct to a comprehensive treatment plan can enhance patient outcomes. This comprehensive course will emphasize the mechanics and theory behind the use of both thermal and electrical modalities. as they apply to a variety of patient diagnoses. The course will also employ critical thinking skills to increase a practitioner's knowledge and skills with the selection and application of
thermal and electrical modalities as they apply to a variety of patient diagnoses.

Topics covered are: principles of thermal and electrical stimulation; corresponding evaluation principles; review of anatomy pertinent to the use of physical agent modalities; precautions and contraindications with the application of physical agent modalities; and descriptions, clinical indications, and application of a variety of heat and cold modalities, Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation (TENS), Iontophoresis, Neuromuscular Electrical Stimulation (NMES), and High Volt Pulsed Stimulation, and Biofeedback.

Numerous case studies will be utilized to enhance learning and application. We will also discuss the ethics and economics of physical agent modalities. Through utilization of lecture, demonstration, and considerable lab practice, participants will be able to apply the information learned and skills practiced directly to their practice settings.

OBJECTIVES:

At the end of this course, participants will be able to:

Describe basic principles of thermal and electrical stimulation and the physiological changes which occur during application of a variety of modalities.
Describe the method/theory of the application of a variety of physical agent modalities.
Identify precautions and contraindications for a variety of physical agent modalities.
Demonstrate the appropriate choice of physical agent modalities to be used in a variety of patient case studies.
Demonstrate the appropriate application of a variety of physical agent modalities during interactive lab sessions.
Describe the ethical, economical, and liability related to the use of physical agent modalities.
Demonstrate new learning of physical agent modalities information by passing a post test.
