Description:

Pediatric and Adult Therapeutic Taping

This course is designed for physical and occupational therapists working with all ages. The course focuses on the use of static and dynamic taping techniques in the treatment of children and adults with alignment issues and neurologic involvement. Taping
techniques involved include the use of rigid strapping tape, Kinesiotape, Velcro patches and elastic straps, neoprene wraps and other options. Review of developmental biomechanics and relation to treatment are also included.

OBJECTIVES: Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:

Identify specific developmental features in trunk, upper and lower extremities in the typical population.
Explain the importance of proper alignment for support and initiation of movement patterns.
Utilize basic assessment techniques for biomechanical alignment and range of motion.
Relate assessment findings to problem solve and develop treatment options.
Identify contraindications to taping.
Be familiar with taping materials including: Leukotape, Hypafix, Kinesio® Tex tape, neoprene, Nustim wrap, Prowrap, Fabrifoam, and latex-free tapes.
Describe the principles of taping as an adjunct to treatment for the client with alignment issues.
Explain the use of tape as a way to improve neuromuscular re-education through improved alignment in functional activities.
Explain skin care and use of tape to clients and families.
Demonstrate taping techniques for correction of specific alignment concerns.

PRESENTER:

Keith W. Filip, PT, COMS, MED, MA, has been practicing physical therapy for nearly 30 years, in the specialties of heart transplants, pelvic floor, Vestibular rehab, and movement analysis laboratory. He holds a Master's degree in education from Cleveland State University and a Master's in special education from Michigan State University. He is a certified Orientation & Mobility Specialist for the visually impaired, specializing in early intervention, preschool, and cortical visual impairment.
